HOW TO BECOME AN OFFICIAL IN
Revised January
15, 2008
Take a look at the Officials Standards - http://www.inswimming.org/files/forms/stds.pdf
as this is an outline of requirements for each level and what will be expected for renewing next year. Review the Level 3 as this is the entry level for an official.
Know what region you are in, so you can contact the appropriate Regional Officials Rep - http://www.inswimming.org/files/board/regions.htm or contact any member of the Official’s Committee for ISI.
Check the ISI website for upcoming Officials clinics or contact your Regional Officials Rep (ROR) to inquire about any new officials clinics in the near future. If the ROR doesn’t have any planned, s/he may plan one or refer to you a larger club that traditionally hosts clinics (as any Referee can conduct a clinic).
Before you attend a clinic, you can download and complete the 2 forms needed below. One is your USA Swimming membership application (must be completed and renewed annually) - http://www.inswimming.org/files/forms/nonathapp.pdf. The second is the Indiana Officials Application - http://www.inswimming.org/files/forms/offapp.pdf. Please note the checklist of items and payments due. You only pay the USA Swimming fee on 1 of the forms (it’s merely a checklist item on the Indiana Officials Application so that you don’t forget to include it).
Access the online tests from the
USA Swimming Rulebooks are sent to all non-athlete members. So, AFTER you become an official, you will be on the mailing list to receive this Rulebook. It’s updated annually and sent out in February. However, in order to take the online tests, you’ll need a rulebook. You may download or print the copy of the rule book. You will only need to print sections 101.1 through 105.5 and MS 1.0 through MS 2.8 as those are the pages from which the tests are structured.
You should submit your applications and check for applicable amount owed to Indiana Swimming (ISI) to the address on the Officials Application. Test results will be sent to the Officials Chair and ISI. Your cards and holder will come from ISI in one mailing. If you order a name badge, that may come separately. This entire process may take a few weeks.
If you wish to apprentice a meet and you don’t have your cards back yet, be sure to take an index card to the meet for the Meet Referee to initial that you apprenticed. You can simply keep that index card with your other cards once you receive them. Your clinic Referee will inform you of the protocol for asking to work / apprentice sessions.
If you have any questions after reading all this information, contact your Regional Official’s Chair or any member of the Official’s Committee. The ISI offices merely process the completed paperwork and may not be able to answer all questions you may have.
